The Girl From Calgary

FILM - The Girl From Calgary is a 1932 pre-code musical comedy starring Fifi D'Orsay (1904-1983) and Paul Kelly (1899-1956). Produced by the Poverty Row studio Monogram Pictures, it tells the story of a plucky French-Canadian nightclub singer and bronc buster who leaves Calgary in search of fame and fortune in the Big Apple. The film opens with a 5 minute montage of the Calgary Stampede Parade and Rodeo. This is the only footage shot in Calgary. Rodeoing aside, the rest of the plot actually parallels D'Orsay's own life to some extent. Born Marie-Rose Angelina Yvonne Lussier in Montreal, she headed to New York at a young age where she got her start in vaudeville before moving on to Hollywood. Along the way she adopted a stage name and developed her Parisian coquette persona. She starred in a number of movies in the 30s and later revived her career with steady work on television and Broadway.
